  20.     Thanks for the follow up. Here's my follow up:

  22.     I had to disable a built in port via the BIOS because of a
  23.     conflict with an SMC PnP ethernet card.
  24.  
  25.     Several others also reported that the same modem (same version
  26.     and ROM checksum even) worked fine in their Tyan MB's. The
  27.     third one I tried would transfer up to 10K files with no problem,
  28.     but larger files eventually caused it to lock up _again_. So
  29.     that was three strikes with USR. I used the RMA to get a
  30.     Practical Peripherals, which works just fine. (Two FTP connections
  31.     and a telnet - this telnet - and IBM's dialer reports 3550 CPS
  32.     and IT DOESN'T LOCK UP! It doesn't do voice either, but that
  33.     doesn't matter much when the modem doesn't perform it's normal
  34.     functions in the first place.
